Democratic Party entities, including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, for years enjoyed an advantage in digital fundraising over their Republican counterparts. But last year, the National Republican Congressional Committee raised $140 million Largely because of a 115% increase in contributions from online donors compared to 2019, (Washington Examiner.) In the last quarter of 2021, the three main Democratic Party fundraising committees raised $77.7 million in donations of less than $200. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) reports raising a “whopping” $146 million in 2021, which the committee said shattered by $22 million its previous off-election year fundraising record.
The NRCC collected $17.9 million in December and closed 2021 with $78.2 million to spend on midterm elections. House Republicans are targeting dozens of seats in their bid to flip the five-seat Democratic majority and install Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy as speaker. The memo from the House GOP campaign arm, detailing a spike in digital fundraising compared to the previous off year (the year before the election year) suggests they are certain to have the resources.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy raised $11.75 million in the fourth quarter of last year, bringing the potential next speaker’s total haul for 2021 to $72.4 million.
The California Republican transferred more than one-third of what he raised, $25.3 million, to the National Republican Congressional Committee.
The NRCC is charged with leading GOP efforts to recapture the House in midterm elections, and McCarthy is in line to succeed Speaker Nancy Pelosi if Republicans win the majority.
“As we begin an election year, the contrast couldn’t be starker. While Democrats are retiring and running for the exits at a historic pace, Republican candidates and voters are rallying behind our mission to take back the House,” McCarthy said Wednesday in a statement.
